The renaissance revival buckle/brooch designed as a depiction of an angel playing a viola surrounded by cherubs in an architectural mount set with black enamel, oval and circular cabochon rubies and pearls, mounted in gold and silver, one cherub deficient, signed Froment Meurice, length 5.2cm

François-Desire Froment-Meurice was one of the leading French jewellers of the Renaissance revival. His technique of ‘viele argent’ became used across the continent and he was winner of numerous medals for his jewellery. Victor Hugo even penned a poem about him.

The central modelled figure of the Virgin in blue enamel robes with astral star detail and garnet accents, above stylised enamel clouds and polychrome enamel pillar on closed-set table-cut garnet cluster rosette with white enamel petal detail flanked by matching garnet foliate motifs the figure of the Virgin with garnet crown surmount and flanked by enamelled acolyte angels, the riveted openwork back plate with blue, white and green enamel detail, suspending triple pearl two stone drops, Spanish, circa 1650, possible later embellishments, later brooch fitting, 8.0cm.

A Renaissance Revival Silver, Gold, Diamond and Turquoise Brooch,
possibly Bulgari, depicting a gold Putti atop a silver openwork base containing numerous turquoise cabochons together with table and rose cut diamonds, one rectangular step cut stone of later addition, suspended from an openwork top, reverse is intricately engraved in a feathered and foliate motif, hidden bail allows wear as pendant, pin stem and clasp of later addition, brooch measures approximately 73.00 x 35.00 mm.
Accompanied by a leather case embossed on top with repeated fleur-de-lys pattern and signed in the interior S. BVLGARI. 10.VIA CONDOTTI-ROMA.
