      • Star BroochesStar Brooches. The stars were observed by ancient peoples thousands of years ago. They were used for navigation, time-keeping and agriculture for centuries as well as mythology and astrology, it is therefore not surprising that stars were a popular form for jewelry, including brooches. Star brooches have been in use since Roman times and possibly before, however,  it was in the Medieval age where they first began to become popular items of adornment among the wealthy.

Verdura

Verdura was founded by Fulco Santostefano della Corda, Duke of Verdura (1898-1978), an aristocratic jeweller who left his ancestral home in Sicily for Paris where he worked for Chanel, first as a textile designer and then as a jeweller. In 1934 he left Paris for America working first in Hollywood and then moved in 1939 to New York where he opened his own ‘salon’ on Fifth Avenue. His clientele were the rich and famous and his designs were calculated to flatter the wearer. After he retired in 1973 The firm of Verdura was taken over in 1985 by Ward Landrigan, the former Sotheby’s jewellery head, who has restored the company’s design albums with Verdura’s thousands of miniature tempera-on-vellum sketches.
