      • Star BroochesStar Brooches. The stars were observed by ancient peoples thousands of years ago. They were used for navigation, time-keeping and agriculture for centuries as well as mythology and astrology, it is therefore not surprising that stars were a popular form for jewelry, including brooches. Star brooches have been in use since Roman times and possibly before, however,  it was in the Medieval age where they first began to become popular items of adornment among the wealthy.

Blackamoor Brooches

Price guide to antique and vintage Blackamoor brooches. Blackamoor is a European art style from the Early Modern period depicting highly stylized figures, usually African males but sometimes other non-European races, in subservient or exoticized form. Blackamoor is often found in sculpture, jewelry, furniture, and decorative art.

Venetian Blackamoor jewelry is probably the most representative example of the typical Italian skill and handicraft that takes it’s roots in the history of the Venice Republic (“La Serenissima”): since the 16 th century the antique moors have become symbols of Venetian goldsmith tradition and still now they’re part of Venice’s culture and legacy.
